Revolutionary Road

The movie Revolutionary Road looks a lot like the with Oscars crowned film American Beauty. Here we can see how even the simplest American dream – a satisfied family life in a house in the suburbs - isn’t working. Frank and April Wheeler are a young married couple. They are living a not much exciting life of the middle class exactly like their neighbors but they are feeling that they don’t belong here. April is not attracted by the idea of the housekeeper and the nursemaid of her own children. She wants to become an actress and she is trying to convince her husband Frank to move to Paris because she feels she can self-realize here. And Frank is also not happy with his career as an office rat but instead of dreaming of Paris he drinks a lot and flirts with his secretary. As they unit dreams and hopes are shattered, their relationship is shattered too. Their only way back to the top is a radical solution. But at first they have to find the strength to do it. Without the strength their relationship is doomed to annihilation. This movie is the adaption of the same-named book from Richard Yates. The book was rated as one of the best 100 English books and many hope that the movie will be as good as the book, maybe even better.

Gran Torino

This story dangles round the war veteran Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood). Eastwood has played this role masterfully. The old man who has lost one of the two things that he had truly loved in his life. He has lost his wife. But the amazing car Ford Gran Torino is still standing in his garage (from the name of the car is the title of the movie). A typical veteran who is surrounded by loneliness and who hates life and people around him - including his neighbors. And these neighbor relationships are building the core of this movie. His neighborhood are building Asiatic immigrants and he as a veteran from the Korean war is not taking well this situation. His thoughts towards this people, and not just them, are wrapped in a rough but great humor. The plot of this movie builds the attempt to steal his beloved car Gran Torino. A boy from his neighborhood was forced by his cousin to do it and he failed but Walt nearly killed him. This fact just increases the hatred in him. The sister of the boy, who has tried to steal his car, is trying to enlighten the situation and somehow with her simpleness and naturalness she gets near to Walt…

As part of the Leonard Cohen World Tour 2009 will perform on the 29th August in Vysočanská O2 arena. Monsters vs. Aliens

On our round blue planet was once again attacked by aliens. Fortunately we have a big amount of superheroes that will stand against the aliens. This movie begins there where other ends. She grows rapidly and she is now 15 meters high. When Earth is under the attack of the alien and nothing helps, our “monsters” are called to help to protect our planet. Calmness in the Soul

The story of the movie Calmness in the Soul begins with the arrival of Tóno from the prison to his home village Čierny Hron. Tóno finds out that he is not as near to his wife as he was and he doesn’t know anything about his son. And this is not everything, he also can’t find a job because of his past and he doesn’t want to steal anymore. Marek and Peter, Tóno’s loyal friends from childhood, want to help Tóno to return to normal life. But they have their own problems and they have to find their own way how to settle up with the fact that their illusions of life collide with the hard reality. Tóno is feeling alone and he is desperately searching for an exit. The story is taking place in the background of the rough scenery of mountains with symbols typical for this region – patriarchate, poaching and race-hatred but also with a strong tradition of family life, confidence, friendship and love. The whole story also takes the signs of a classical drama.

Watchmen

In the beginning of the film we will find a dead body. It is the dead body of a superhero - Edward Blake – know as the Comedian. But the dead body isn’t disturbing anyone – the world has another problems. The masked superheroes are not anymore the watchmen of the humanity, they are living on the edge of the society and they are barely remembering the old good times. Just Roschach thinks otherwise. He sees a conspiracy beyond the Comedian’s death, which should destroy or discredit the remaining living superheroes and open the door to a more disgusting project. Roschach tries to prevent the worst and he tries to mobilize all his remaining colleagues, from which just one has real super powers. Their goal is to watch the humanity, but who will watch them?

Alsanea Rajaa: Girls from Rijad (Dievčatá z Rijádu)

The young Arabian author decided to share her view of the world of the Islamic women, of love, of relationships, of marriage and of other things. She, of course, decided to use a completely new point of view that is known for us from literature. Without to phony up or to lament the story she just started to tell a story about four friends – girls from Rijad’s high society. Sadím, Gamrah, Lamís and Mašael called Michelle are falling in love, get engaged, get married and get divorced. But we can also see them studying, working, worrying and also enjoying life. And so we little by little, non-violently penetrate the thinking of the local men and we also penetrate the thinking of multiple family clans. We will think about the differences between the Arabian families and the West-European families and we will come to the conclusion that there aren’t so many immensurable differences as we at first thought.
